Liberty defeats Sky, ending Angel Reese’s legendary double-double run

Angel Reese’s historic double-double streak came to an end on Saturday at the hands of New York Liberty, with Sabrina Ionescu posting 28 points in Liberty’s 81-67 win.

Reese had recorded a double-double for 15 consecutive games prior to Saturday, setting a WNBA record and becoming many people’s pick for Rookie of the Year ahead of Caitlin Clark.

Jonquel Jones added 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists for New York. Leonie Fiebich scored 13 to tie her career high and Ivana Dojkic added 12.

Liberty became the first side to reach 20 wins for the season in what was their third win over the Sky this season. New York were without reigning MVP Breanna Stewart and starter Betnijah Laney-Hamilton but still managed to keep Reese relatively quiet.

Reese finished with eight points and 16 rebounds for the night, while Marina Mabrey scored 21 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and seven assists. Michaela Onyenwere scored a season-high 14 for Chicago.

Storm inflict heavy defeat on Lynx

Nneka Ogwumike tied her career high with 26 points as the Seattle Storm (15-8) ended a three-game losing streak against the Minnesota Lynx (16-7), beating them 91-63 on Friday.

Skylar Diggins-Smith also tied a career-high of 12 assists to add to her 10 points. Jewell Loyd added 14 points for the Storm while Ezi Magbegor scored 10.

Storm took a huge lead in the second quarter, which they started just three points ahead and ended with a lead of 50-37 – which proved to be insurmountable for Minnesota. The Lynx were completely scoreless in that quarter until Diamond Miller’s shot with 4:58 left on the clock.

Kayla McBride took the scoring mantle for her side, scoring 27 points and making six threes despite not playing in the fourth quarter. The remainder of the Lynx’s starters combined for a paltry 14 points.

The Lynx were without Napheesa Collier for a third straight game, however, with the forward averaging 20 points per game and the Lynx dearly missing her performances.

Sami Whitcomb opened the fourth quarter with two three-pointers, all but burying the Lynx as Seattle went on a 9-0 run.

Storm now waits a month for the Olympic break before facing the Atlanta Dream (7-15) in August.

Sparks beat Wings in battle at the bottom

Bottom-placed Dallas Wings suffered their 19th loss of the season as the Los Angeles Sparks inflicted an 87-81 loss on the Wings.

Dearica Hamby scored 27 points for the visitors and rookie Rickea Jackson added a career-high 23 points.

Azura Stevens finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks while Aari McDonald added 12 points.

The two sides were tied with five wins for the season before the Sparks’ win in a battle of the WNBA’s cellar dwellers.

Odyssey Sims led Dallas with 23 points as she continued an impressive run of scoring in double figures since signing with the side on June 25. Natasha Howard scored 14 points, Kalani Brown scored 13 and Teaira McCowan added 10.

It was Los Angeles’ second win in 13 games and only their fourth since May 28. Dallas have won just two games since May 26.

The Sparks welcome the Seattle Storm to LA in their final game before the Olympic break, and Dallas Wings face Indiana Fever on July 18.
