Caitlin Clark Makes Bad WNBA History Against Washington Mystics

On Wednesday afternoon against the Washington Mystics, Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark made history yet again. This time, it wasn’t a record a player wants to break.

After picking up her fifth turnover of the game, Clark passed the late Nikki McCray’s record for the most turnovers in a rookie season in WNBA history. Her record-tying turnover was her 127th of the season, passing McCray’s 126 mark set in 1998. Even more unfortunate for Clark: It took her 23 games to reach this number; McCray did it in 29 games.

The good news for Clark in breaking this kind of record is the career leaders in turnovers are some of the best to ever play the game. Diana Taurasi has the most in WNBA history with 1,490 in her career. LeBron James has the most in the NBA (5,211). Clark is going down the right path in a way.

Clark is also on pace to break the single-season WNBA turnover record (137) set by Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas in 2023.

Clark is averaging a league-leading 5.5 turnovers per game, which is 1.7 more than the next highest.

Despite this embarrassing new record, Clark is still having a great rookie season. She will join fellow rookie Angel Reese as the only two rookies to make the WNBA All-Star game.

Clark has also broken numerous good records throughout the season. She became the fastest to reach 300 or more points, 100 or more assists, and 100 or more rebounds in WNBA history. She also became the first rookie ever to record a triple-double.
