In September, AJ and Dubois will square off in the ring; both combatants are well into their preparations for this titanic heavyweight bout. Anthony Joshua is the favorite to overcome Daniel Dubois in their September heavyweight bout, according to an unbeaten fighter. AJ, 34, is presently on a four-fight winning streak at heavyweight and will continue to savor his second-round knockout victory over Francis Ngannou, the former UFC champion, from their March megafight in Saudi Arabia. However, he will be very motivated to win back the heavyweight championships he lost to Oleksandr Usyk in 2022—the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO.
With a 28-3 record, Joshua defeated great names like Alexander Povetkin, Joseph Parker, and Wladimir Klitschko before losing his aforementioned championships to Andy Ruiz Jr in his first professional loss in 2019. While he would atone for his setback and reclaim his titles the next year by defeating the same guy, he would be unable to recoup his original loss against Usyk in 2021.
AJ would lose to the Ukrainian in a unanimous decision at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before a rematch in 2022, ruling off the possibility of a third championship battle. However, wins against Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, Otto Walin, and Ngannou have helped the Watford-born star gradually return to contention for the crown.
But if he wants to see his prized belts again, he’ll have to beat fellow Brit Dubois, 26, later this year. Dubois hopes to challenge for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and WBC crowns after an unbeaten Usyk denied him four of the five belts in Wroclaw last year, defeating him in the ninth round.
AJ and Dubois are no strangers inside the squared circle, having sparred several times as the latter prepped for Olympic greatness in the 2020 Tokyo Games, following in Joshua’s footsteps after winning gold in London in 2012. And Sky Boxing reporter Adam Smith says he attended several of these workouts, advising fans that they can anticipate a “pretty terrific” contest in September.
In September, Joshua and Dubois will clash at Wembley.
Smith told the Pro Boxing Fans YouTube channel: “The British fight fans get an opportunity to see AJ again, and in a tremendous domestic dust-up, which doesn’t happen very often. You remember back to Lewis Bruno and those types of evenings, but it’s fantastic because they’re two really powerful British heavyweights with a long history.
“I’ve watched them spar so many rounds at Team GB, and I guarantee you they were all really good – pretty hot stuff. So, I’m looking forward to that. Dubois will believe that with this fresh lease of life, he can dethrone AJ, who is back under Ben Davison’s wing, appearing extremely intelligent, efficient, and at his best. Bring it on, great!”
Dubois opted to give up his Olympic hopes in favor of becoming a professional, signing with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions. Dubois has a remarkable 21-2 record with 20 knockouts, defeating Filip Hrgović, Jarell Miller, and Trevor Bryan.
Joshua’s most recent victory came against Francis Ngannou.
The IBF interim heavyweight champion will be wanting to prove that he can beat the best of the best when he goes toe to toe with Joshua come September, having been beaten by legends in Joe Joyce and the aforementioned Usyk in high-pressure title fights prior. But undefeated super heavyweight Frazer Clarke has Joshua as the favourite to reign supreme over his former teammate when the two clash.
Speaking to PBF, the 32-year-old admitted: “I’ve seen hundreds of rounds with them. I will be curious. Obviously, they’ve both progressed significantly since then. I still have Joshua as my favourite, but Daniel might surprise me because I had Hrgovic as a little favourite against him the previous day.
“Who knows?” I believe they both have strong teams around them, and Daniel will recognize that he cannot take as many right hands as he did when he took Hrgovic away from Joshua because…he will know that himself. Different combatants. Listen, it’s the heavyweight class; anything can happen, and the way things are right now, with everyone fighting each other, there are constant surprises and shocks. So, who knows.
