In the wake of Amazon Prime Video’s Vought Rising announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, I don’t want Jared Padalecki in The Boys season 5 as much as I want him to have a substantial role in the upcoming spinoff.

During SDCC, Screen Rant learned that The Boys‘ universe is expanding with a second spinoff series. Unlike Gen V, which unfolds alongside the events of The Boys, Vought Rising is a prequel. Best of all, it’s confirmed that Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash will reprise their roles as Soldier Boy and Stormfront in Vought Rising, promising a star-studded outing.

So far, The Boys‘ creator Eric Kripke, who also made the Padalecki and Ackles-led Supernatural, has been pretty tight-lipped about Vought Rising‘s plot. I’m excited to hear that The Boys‘ prequel will lean into its 1950s New York setting — and I’m even more thrilled that Ackles, who joined the SDCC panel, dubbed the spinoff a “lurid pulp saga prequel.“ That said, I imagine Vought Rising will more than deliver, especially if Gen V‘s success is any indication. It also makes me feel less pressed about Padalecki reuniting with his fellow Supernatural alum in The Boys season 5.

The Boys’ Prequel Allows For A More Satisfying Supernatural Reunion

Since Jensen Ackles is one of the stars of Vought Rising, I can’t help but feel that the spinoff is now the best place for Jared Padalecki to make his long-awaited cameo in The Boys‘ universe. Ackles, who plays America’s first and greatest superhero, had a cameo appearance in The Boys season 4’s ending, and has confirmed that he’ll appear in the parent show’s fifth and final season. Still, a Supernatural reunion seems better suited to Vought Rising; Ackles’ Soldier Boy is a main character in the prequel, so there’s more room to create a meta role for Padalecki.

I know Jared Padalecki’s condition for his The Boys cameo has been pretty consistent and straight-forward: The Actor just needs the time to do it. Now that Walker, a show he starred in and executive produced, has been canceled, Padalecki has been vocal about his willingness to reunite with Kripke and Ackles for The Boys. Best known for playing demon-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, Padalecki and Ackles’ reunion in Vought Rising — a murder mystery about the supe company’s origins — seems like the perfect way to pay homage to the actors’ past Supernatural roles.

The Final Season Of The Boys Has Too Much To Cover

Of course, I wouldn’t say “no” to Jared Padalecki appearing in both shows — if his character’s arc allows for it. After all, there are plenty of Compound V-enhanced supes, like Soldier Boy and Stormfront, who have looked the same for decades. However, with so much happening in the original series, and The Boys‘ cast of characters growing more packed by the moment, it’s hard to imagine Padalecki would have much more than a cameo in The Boys season 5. If Kripke really wants to do Padalecki’s long-awaited cameo justice, The Boys‘ prequel is a better fit.
