- WNBA. Caitlin Clark makes WNBA history even amid Fever struggles
It’s no secret that morale is low within the Indiana Fever team. With a dismal record of 1-7, they narrowly avoid having the worst record in the league, thanks only to the winless Washington Mystics. Adding to the team’s woes, third-year forward NaLyssa Smith is visibly unhappy with her current role on the team.
Since the arrival of rookie Caitlin Clark, it’s been expected that she would take charge of the offense. Clark has performed well in her first eight games, leading the Fever in points (17.3), assists (6.3), and minutes (32.1). However, she also leads the team and league in turnovers (5.5).
NaLyssa Smith’s discontent with her role became evident through a recent social media “like” that criticized head coach Christie Sides. Last season, Smith averaged 15.5 points and 9.2 rebounds in 28.5 minutes. This year, she’s averaging 9.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 22 minutes per game over the first eight games. While these stats aren’t terrible, they don’t reflect her recent struggles.

In the Fever’s victory over the Sparks on May 24, Sides played Smith for only 11 minutes. In the subsequent two games, Smith logged just over 18 minutes each. She scored three points on three attempts in Tuesday night’s game, with a team-worst plus-minus of (-24), following prior games with plus-minus ratings of (-9) and (-6). With numbers like these, it’s hard to make a strong case, but Smith’s experience and leadership are crucial to the team.
The Indiana Fever will need to address these internal issues to turn their season around and make the most of their not so talented roster. NaLyssa Smith’s situation highlights the challenges the team faces as they navigate this difficult period. Next game for the Fever is tomorrow 6:00pm ET at home against the Seattle Storm team that has already defeat them 85-83 last week in Seattle.
