After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Andrii volunteered in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During one of the combat missions, the man was seriously wounded in the Russian shelling. Now, he undergoes complex rehabilitation with the support of his wife.
His story was told by photographers Kostiantyn Liberov & Vlada Liberova.
Before the full-scale war, Andrii sang in a choir and enjoyed traveling. But after Russia attacked the country in 2022, Andrii volunteered in the air reconnaissance unit of the 47th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and became its commander.
While performing one of the combat missions, Andrii came under Russian fire. One of the enemy shells exploded right under his feet. “Andrii’s comrades and military medics who evacuated him were sure they would not be able to take him [alive to the first-aid post]. Meanwhile, Andrii himself remained conscious and gave orders,” Liberovs wrote.
Due to received injuries, Andrii lost parts of both arms, sight, and partially his hearing. Nevertheless, despite all the difficulties, the man doesn’t lose his heart. He is currently in the hospital undergoing rehabilitation. His beloved wife Alina supports him and takes care of him. She lives in the hospital with Andrii, helps him eat, meets the physiotherapist, and after the procedure lies down next to her beloved husband.
“Andrii constantly analyzes what he did wrong. Wonders, what if he left the position earlier or, on the contrary, delayed. But he never thinks that he might not have gone to war. There is no such option for him,” add Liberovs.
Currently, Andrii is in stable condition, but he will still have to undergo complex rehabilitation. In addition, the couple is actively exploring the possibilities of the so-called bionic vision, which can help the Ukrainian hero see the world around him again.
