Eric Kripke Drops Major News on ‘The Boys: Mexico’ Spinoff Development!

Eric Kripke, showrunner of The Boys, provides a candid update on the Mexico-set spinoff, which was announced in November 2023. Following a great debut for Gen V, which immediately received a season 2 renewal, The Boys season 4 is set to begin in June. There is a strong relationship between the two series, with characters moving across back and forth. But little has been revealed about The Boys: Mexico since its first announcement.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kripke has updated the progress of The Boys: Mexico. The showrunner and executive producer shared that a deal is still being worked out with the writer of the pilot, indicating that scripts for the spinoff have yet to be written. Overall, Kripke explained that the project was still “a while away. Read the quote below:

“They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot. He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show before it’s a real show. He’s got to write an amazing pilot, he’s probably got to write an amazing episode 2. I think he can and he will, but we’re a while away from truly starting to drop in the Easter eggs and the setups and stuff.”

What Is Known About The Boys: Mexico?

Diego Luna & Gael Garcia Bernal Are Behind The Project

“But in the same interview, Kripke assured that audiences don’t have to watch all The Boys to enjoy any individual spinoff.”

News of The Boys: Mexico was officially reported in late November 2023. The project hails from executive producers Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, who got their breakout roles working together in the acclaimed coming-of-age drama Y Tu Mamá También by director Alfonso Cuarón. The duo have since collaborated in other films and have become veteran performers, with a wide variety of credits. Luna, who plays Cassian Andor in the Star Wars universe, and Luna, who recently starred in Marvel’s Werewolf by Night, could potentially appear in the Mexico spinoff but they are not expected to take on main roles.

At the time of the announcement, it was mentioned that a search was underway for a co-showrunner to join Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who would serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. Dunnet-Alcocer has experience in the superhero genre, having penned the script for Blue Beetle. He also wrote the 2019 action movie Miss Bala, starring Gina Rodriguez, and has been attached to Universal’s reimagining of Scarface as its screenwriter.

Plot details for The Boys: Mexico are so far being kept under wraps. But in the same interview, Kripke assured that audiences don’t have to watch all The Boys to enjoy any individual spinoff. That may serve as an indication that the Mexico-set series will largely stand on its own, even with the occasional Easter egg and signs of connectivity. But it’s early days yet.
