Scandal Unleashed: Rihanna Under Fire as Indian Netizens Accuse Her of Cultural Appropriation and Insulting Religious Sentiments!

Fans accused Rihanna of ‘cultural appropriation’ after she wore a religious jewelry in a topless photo.

On Monday, the 36-year-old rapper provoked uproar by posting a racy photo of herself wearing a necklace ornament of the Hindu god Ganesha while modeling shorts from her Savage X Fenty business.

On Twitter, some Hindus criticized the singer’s dress as ‘disrespectful to our religion’ and urged her to remove the image. Others defended the singer’s outfit as ‘fashion’ in today’s society.

The businesswoman apologized to the Muslim community for including a song with important Islamic verses in her Savage x Fenty lingerie presentation.

The artist was forced to pull a highlighter dubbed ‘Geisha Chic’ from her Fenty Beauty firm, and was met with mixed reactions by Harper’s Bazaar readers when she graced the cover of China’s July 2019 issue in a traditional appearance.

‘It’s disrespectful to our religion’: Rihanna has been accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ by fans for wearing a religious pendant in a topless photo

Criticising her recent post, one fan wrote: ‘people need to start holding rihanna accountable for her cultural appropriation cuz im tired.’ (sic)

Another agreed: ‘that’s not even her point! it’s disrespectful to our religion when an idol is used for promoting something which people 𝓈ℯ𝓍ualize, no one’s even blaming her we just want her to realise that it comes off as disrespectful to a whole religion.’ (sic)

A third branded her move ‘disgusting’ as she shared the picture on the same day as Ganesh Jayanti – an annual festival to mark his birthday.

They wrote: ‘rihanna did this on the day of ganesh jayanti celebrities like her have no respect for us absolutely disgusting.’ (sic)

‘People need to start holding her accountable’: The musician, 32, sparked outrage after sporting an ornament of Hindu god Ganesha while modelling Savage X Fenty on Monday

Mixed reviews: In October, the businesswoman issued an apology to the Muslim community for using a song featuring sacred Islamic texts in her Savage x Fenty lingerie show (pictured)

Others added: ‘rihanna !! stop using my religion as an aesthetic !! that ganesh figurine at the end of the chain 🙁 is a holy and sacred figure for us hindus.

‘I’m all here for Rihanna but wearing Ganesh whilst half naked? Sorry but have some respect.

‘Stop using my religion as an aesthetic challenge @rihanna. This is not cultural appropriation but this is demeaning a culture for your muse.

‘okay but are we not going to talk about Rihanna wearing a Ganesh pendant in her picture that she posted today? Hindu appropriation is not an AESTHETIC!!!

‘I am a Muslim but as an Indian and Maharashtrian I love Lord Ganesha ji – sorry this misuse of Ganesha ji image hurts my feelings & sentiments – will Rihanna Backers in India accept this also? #GaneshaInsulted.

‘I love Rihanna, but this isn’t okay’: Some Hindus took to Twitter to claim her outfit was ‘disrespectful to our religion’ and called for her to remove the picture from her platforms

‘the way no one is talking abt how rihanna’s necklace has ganesha on it, an important sacred god to hinduism as he plays a big role in like providing protection, is really disappointing to me. i love rihanna but this isn’t okay.

‘I’ve been seeing a lot of cultural appropriation towards Hindus and other Eastern religions and cultures go on lately. We need to be more vocal about this! @rihanna Pls remove that pic, apologize, and do better!! I’ll have to unfollow. Disappointed.

‘Ugh no.. not you with the cultural appropriation too?! There’s rightful outrage on my TL right now over a photo Rihanna posted where she’s half naked, promoting her lingerie line, while wearing a necklace of Ganesh, a Hindu god.

‘It’s 2021 and by now we should all understand that religion is not an aesthetic.’ (sic)

Some defended Rihanna’s choice as they wrote: ‘If anyone wants to take my culture and traditional costumes and religious figures, do it. I’d be happy to see other people enjoying it also.

‘If anyone wants to take my culture, do it. I’d be happy to others enjoying it also’: Other social media users insisted the singer’s outfit represents ‘fashion’ in today’s age

‘#Rihanna I just want you to know IMO you can wear the f*ck out of that Ganesha necklace. This cultural appropriation thing has gone too far…

‘they can’t be mad when the image of #Ganesha is literally everywhere on clothing etc in the US. #hatersgonnahate.

‘If Rihanna made the pendant herself and claimed it as her own creation, then yes, that is cultural appropriation.

‘But if she bought the pendant from a vendor and happened to be photographed wearing it, someone other than Rihanna needs some real meaning in their life.

‘Rihanna is love, support and provides a vision with her talent. She is grateful in this life.

‘They are selfish&would only believe their gods favor them& should only be seen through them. It’s fashion, it’s reality, it is what it is, they are motivated by money&clout in India.’ (sic)

MailOnline has contacted Rihanna’s representatives for further comment.

Late last year, the Bajan songstress apologised to the ‘Muslim community’ for using a religious song as a soundtrack for one of her lingerie shows.

The Umbrella hitmaker came under fire after a video of the fashion presentation was released on Amazon Prime, which included a song featuring a narration of the sacred Hadith.

Rihanna said she was ‘incredibly disheartened’ knowing she had hurt ‘many of our Muslim brothers and sisters’, and called use of the controversial song ‘completely irresponsible.’

In a statement posted to her Instagram Stories, she said: ‘I’d like to thank the Muslim community for pointing out a huge oversight that was unintentionally offensive in our savage x fenty show.

‘I’m incredibly disheartened by this!’ Late last year, the Bajan songstress apologised to the ‘Muslim community’ for using a religious song as a soundtrack for one of her lingerie shows

‘I would more importantly like to apologize to you for this honest, yet careless mistake. We understand that we have hurt many of our Muslim brothers and sisters, and I’m incredibly disheartened by this!

‘I do not play with any kind of disrespect toward God or any religion and therefore the use of the song in our project was completely irresponsible!

‘Moving forward we will make sure nothing like this ever happens again. Thank you for your forgiveness and understanding.’
