If Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury ever faced off for the undisputed heavyweight championship, Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom, thinks Joshua would prevail. In the interim, Fury needs to defeat Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine, the undisputed WBO, IBF, and WBA champion. That fight takes place in Saudi Arabia on May 18 and can be seen live on TNT Sports Box Office.
Anthony Joshua reacts after victory in the Heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou on the Knockout Chaos boxing card at the Kingdom Arena on March 08, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Eddie Hearn believes that Anthony Joshua can beat Tyson Fury for the undisputed heavyweight championship before he retires.
Joshua had been expected to fight Fury after the WBC champion defeated Deontay Wilder for the second time.
However, the Bronze Bomber forced a trilogy rematch, which saw Joshua diverted into a title defence against Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk.
The Briton was the favourite going into the first match-up, but he convincingly lost both bouts, and Usyk has retained his belts ever since.
Joshua meanwhile rebuilt his career, and his last fight was earlier this year, when he made light work of Francis Ngannou – who knocked Fury down last year before losing on a split decision.
It is now almost time for Fury to meet Usyk, live on TNT Sports Box Office on May 18, as they contest the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua is one of the favourites to land a fight with the winner, as he also seeks to become undisputed.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Joshua’s promoter Hearn explained how Joshua – who also lost to Andy Ruiz in 2019 – might not have been best prepared along the way.
He said: “I look at some of the mistakes we made with AJ’s fights because when the only aim was undisputed, it led to inactivity, it led to maybe the wrong fights.”
Nevertheless, he thinks that Joshua would beat Fury in any fight, and wants it to be the last moment of his career.
“You may call me deluded, but in my mind, AJ beats Tyson Fury for the undisputed championship, and that would be a real sweet way to walk into the sunset,” Hearn added.
Joshua feels similarly determined, feeling a sense of destiny over his future status as undisputed champion.
He reflected: “Doing my best led me to four belts and then I was pushing for the fifth one, but it just didn’t happen.
“I’ve got a strong feeling that undisputed will happen. It’s the final destination.”
