The Boys: Most Hilarious Billy Butcher Quotes: Ranked

Karl Urban’s portrayal as Billy Butcher in Prime Video’s The Boys has given fans some of the show’s finest quotes.

Karl Urban stars as Billy Butcher, everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed Englishman, in Amazon’s TV adaption of The Boys. Billy has become quite jaded since his wife was abused by Homelander and gone – and we can’t blame him.

But his low tolerance for idiots and loud mouth paired with lack of a filter makes him hilarious. The writers gave him some quotes that had us in tears during this nihilistic comic show, and these are a few of the most hilarious quotes ranked on just how doubled over we were.

“Daddy’s Home”

Season 2, Episode 1 “The Big Ride”

“Don’t you worry. Daddy’s home.”

The first season of The Boys ended uncertainly for Billy Butcher, as he abandoned the Boys to take the fight to Homelander, who quickly took control and brought Butcher with him to Becca’s secret home where she lived with Homelander’s son. Butcher stayed away from the team after Becca made a deal with Homelander to save his life.

Though, as soon as he got the call from Frenchie, he rejoined the Boys. His entrance line, while flippant and filled with Butcher’s usual charm and comedy, reveals his true feelings for the team he’s assembled. It’s not his most biting quote, but these four simple words encapsulate how Butcher sees his team and himself, especially after learning about his former wife’s and Homelander’s son.

“Never Go Into Shark-Infested Waters Without Chum”

Season 2, Episode 6 “The Bloody Doors Off”

“Never go into shark-infested waters without chum.”

As Starlight began to secretly work closer with Hughie and the Boys against her teammates in the Seven, Butcher mostly kept her at a safe distance until he invited her along with them to the Sage Grove Center, where Vought was experimenting with Compound V.

While it initially seemed like he was finally welcoming her onto the team, he quickly revealed in his own unique way that she was just there as bait in case the Seven arrived, as they would likely turn on the traitor first and give Billy a better chance of escaping the mission alive. Now that she’s publicly broken with the Seven, she can’t help the Boys in the same way, anymore.

“People Love That Cozy Feeling That Supes Give Them”

Season 1, Episode 1, “The Name of the Game.”

“People love that cozy feeling that Supes give them. Some golden **** to swoop out of the sky and save the day, so you don’t got to do it yourself.”

This is more of a sardonic smile of a quote, but it’s still enough to draw a reaction. It’s relatable. If we had superheroes, we surely would want them to save the day, so we wouldn’t have to do it ourselves.

Billy may often seem like he’s bulldozing around the place without much of a plan in mind, but it’s quite obvious when he says things like this that he’s actually a very insightful and intelligent guy. People may not want to face the negatives of humanity, but this would be one of them if superheroes were real. Of course we’d expect them to do everything for us.

“Translucent’s Always Been My Favorite.”

“I must say what a pleasure it is to see so many more women are in positions of power. You know what I mean? You know, if I’m perfectly honest, Translucent’s always been my favorite.”

It seems like an innocuous comment. If you tuned into the show during this episode and hadn’t seen anything more, or weren’t familiar with Billy, then he’s simply pointing out his favorite member of the Seven — right?

The truth is, he’s saying this to Hughie and his oblivious date Annie January, otherwise known as Starlight. What Starlight doesn’t know is that Hughie murdered Translucent very recently, and Billy is well aware the superhero is dead despite everyone pretending otherwise. It’s a tense moment, but it definitely draws a nervous chuckle at the sheer audacity of Billy’s very obvious threat.

“We’ll Cross That Bridge When We Burn It”

Season 1, Episode 3, “Get Some”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we burn it.”

The phrase is typically, “we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” Billy shows a wary self-awareness in changing the last words to ‘burn it’ because the Boys don’t really have any friends as a gang. It’s a commonly used malaphor, sometimes stated as “We’ll burn that bridge when we come to it.”

Their intentions might be vaguely-good at best (they’re chaotic neutral, to use Dungeons and Dragons terms), but they definitely aren’t very warm and don’t tend to make friends wherever they go. Everyone ends up hating them because of their methods.

“A Stranger Is Just A Friend You Ain’t Met Yet”

Season 2 Episode 3: “Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men”

“A stranger is just a friend you ain’t met yet.”

While Billy and his anti-supe team originally had the backing of the US government, his work with the Boys hasn’t been as well funded, which sometimes requires Butcher to acquire their essentials through less than legal means. When the Boys needed a yacht to transport Kimiko’s superpowered brother in the second season, Butcher stole the boat without the knowledge of his team.

When the Coast Guard revealed it was stolen and the Boys confronted Billy, he used his own warped sense of logic to explain himself, as usual. This quote really captures how Butcher sees the world, and the way he uses his hilarious wit to cover up the ways he misleads others.

“Comparatively Speaking, This Will Be A Piece of Cake”

Season 1, Episode 5 “Good for the Soul”

“Hughie, you’ve done a murder. Comparatively speaking, this will be a piece of cake.”

Hughie is very nervous about the idea of infiltrating Ezekiel during a religious ceremony when Homelander is present. His fear of Homelander is still very high, even though their mission isn’t particularly difficult.

Billy is, perhaps sensibly, a little befuddled by this and points out that Hughie has literally 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed a supe — talking to Ezekiel (and blackmailing him) should be a piece of cake in comparison to finding the guts to blow someone up. Of course, Hughie did that by accident, so it’s no large comfort.
