Boxing’s newest superstar is one of the most humble men in the sport – as he has shown time and again
Anthony Joshua’s amazing fight with Wladimir Klitschko has turned the 27 year-old Londoner into a genuine sporting superstar overnight.
By knocking out the 41 year-old heavyweight legend – and doing so in a scrap that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Rocky movie – the new IBF and WBA heavweight champion has, in the words of his promoter Eddie Hearn, “become the biggest star in British sport”.
However, it seems unlikely that ‘AJ’ will get too carried away with his new levels of fame and fortune.
Joshua is determined to remain humble and down to earth – as he has proven time and again…
Giving a car to his former coach
In the build-up to the Klitschko fight, AJ paid a visit to his old coach Sean Murphy, at Finchley Amateur Boxing Club – and handed him the keys to a £60,000 BMW.
Joshua explained: “These guys will always have their door open for me; when all is said and done I’ll always remember who was there when no-one else was.”
Murphy was blown away. “I remember Josh saying to me a long time ago, ‘I’ll look after you’, but you don’t expect this,” he said. “”Him winning the world title was enough for me.”
His humble home
You might expect a heavyweight champion of the world to live in a plush, extravagant, gold-plated penthouse apartment. Not Joshua.
AJ still loves at home with his mum, in the Golders Green council flat he bought for her when he started making good money. Speaking of which…
His love for his mum
The most important person in AJ’s life is his mum, Yeta Odusanya.
Britain’s biggest boxer (both literally and figuratively) is so keen to avoid upsetting his mum, he BANNED her from the fight at Wembley, concerned at how she might cope with seeing her son get punched in the face by Dr Steelhammer.
His love for his team

One of the first things Joshua put on social media after the biggest win of his career was this image, giving credit to the massive group of people who he believes made the victory possible.
The caption? “Team Behind The Dream.”
His low-key celebrations

After his epic evening, ‘AJ’ might have felt entitled to hit the town and party long into the night.
Instead, Joshua’s first thought was… to get some sleep. When asked how he planned to celebrate his legendary win, he said: “With a lie-in until midday.
“Then I will catch up with all my family. Normally after a fight, I like to go away on holiday, but this time, all I want to do is go round to my family’s houses and catch up with them.”
