Tilda Swinton voices the octopus in scenes where they discuss their romantic bond.
The Deep’s relationship with Ambrosius the octopus is generally played for laughs throughout the program. However, in season 4, episode 7, the plot takes a darker turn. In one scenario, Ambrosius admits that she is aware that The Deep has been hooking up with Sister Sage, sparking a large dispute regarding Sage’s exploitation of him. Things become increasingly heated until The Deep, having professed his superiority as a supe, wrecks Ambrosius’ tank. He then exits the room and sits, listening to Ambrosius struggle for air as she dies.
While The Seven has been vehemently opposed to The Deep’s acts of bestiality throughout The Boys, Ambrosius’ bond with The Deep has been The Deep’s only truly positive character interaction throughout the series. The fact that The Deep’s supremacist ideals have prompted him to injure and đđŸđđ the only character who has ever truly loved him demonstrates how far gone the supe has become. This action demonstrated that The Deep has not improved and is just getting worse.
The Boys Season 2 Teased The Deep’s Possible Redemption
He Had One Shot
The Deep was a horrible person throughout The Boys season 1, but season 2 of the TV series took a turn by teasing The Deep’s redemption. After being fired from The Seven, The Deep goes on a journey of self-discovery, attempting to make right the wrong he did to Starlight. During this time, a cult known as the Church of the Collective begins to take advantage of The Deep, brainwashing him and putting him in a position where viewers of The Boys could feel some sympathy for the character. Interestingly, this continued into season 3.
Although he is still fighting against the protagonists of The Boys, The Deep rejoining Vought’s premier supe team as a member of The Seven seemed to be a second chance for the character, showing that he had the potential to be much better. However, The Deep’s continued role in Homelander’s evil plans completely undid his season 2 development, throwing the character’s redemption arc out the window. Despite this, some still believed The Deep could have a redemption arc later in the series.
A-Train’s The Boys Season 4 Story Makes Deep’s Redemption Even Less Likely
There Isn’t Room For Another Redemption
Although The Boys season 4 was another chance for The Deep to get a redemption arc, A-Train’s story makes this seem less likely. Although A-Train’s murder of Hughie’s girlfriend made him the first antagonist of The Boys, the character has finally had a change of heart. The Boys have convinced A-Train to go against Homelander’s plans and help the team take down Vought, with A-Train deciding to do this to look like a true hero in the eyes of his nephews.
Based on A-Train’s season 4 tale, The Deep’s redemption will most likely not occur in season 4, according to the pattern that The Boys has closely followed. The Boys only redeems one supe at a time, with Queen Maeve deconstructing The Seven’s worldview in the first two seasons and Black Noir receiving some atonement in The Boys season four. The Deep’s last chance to be redeemed will be in The Boys season 5, and given his acts in season 4, this arc appears increasingly unlikely.
