Exclusive: Mary J. Blige Responds to the Meme of Her and Her Boots

It was impossible for Mary J. Blige and Giuseppe Zanotti to have imagined that The Mary Boot would become as successful as it has when they first introduced a line of footwear.

Blige, 53, talked with ET about her eponymous shoes while she was at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Thursday for the launch of the fourth and final season of her criminal drama series, Power Book II: Ghost.

“I’m so grateful to have launched this with Giuseppe, [who is] a friend of mine and someone whose shoes I’ve admired since I discovered them,” Blige said. “I even mentioned him in one of my raps.”

At a retail price of $1,300, the knee-high Mary Boot—made of a glittering rose-gold synthetic fabric—sold out in a single day.

The boot gained popularity on TikTok as well, when users posted videos describing how wearing them made them feel, walk, and dance like Mary J. Blige.

“The boot is just something that is my trademark,” Blige remarked in response to all of the memes that the fashion collaboration has generated. “I have been wearing it and doing it for years. It’s a part of who I am and what makes me, myself. That’s what my legacy is. I have worn these for many years.”

And even though it sold out in a single day, Blige declared with excitement, “We’re launching again in ten days! Giuseppe and Mary

Only a few days will pass until the release of her last season of Power Book II: Ghost before the fashion launch.

Playing the tough-as-nails matriarch of the Tejada crime family and drug cartel, Monet Stewart Tejada, Blige has been a standout of the widely watched crime thriller on Starz since its premiere.

Blige said, “I’m going to miss playing Monet so much.” This is really quite bittersweet. I have many new buddies. Playing with Monet was so healing and beneficial. It was a terrific, great time.”

Starring Michael Rainey Jr., Method Man, Shane Johnson, Gianni Paolo, Lovell Adams-Gray, and executive producer 50 Cent, Part 1 of the fourth and final season of Power Book II: Ghost will debut on Starz on June 7.
