Mary J Blige reveals she ‘cried like a 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢’ when she turned 50 years old plus why she has been ‘championing’ Black stuntwomen

The nine-time Grammy-winning singer turned the big 5-0 in early January, with Ellen recalling that they’ve known each other for 20 years.

The talk show host wished the singer a belated happy 50th birthday, and when asked how she felt, Blige said she got emotional.

‘Oh man, I feel great. When it hit at 12 o’clock that night, I just cried like a 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 because I made it,’ the singer said.

‘I’ve been through hell in my life, and to make it to 50, it was just beautiful. Family and friends were around, it was just beautiful,’ Blige added.

The singer celebrated her birthday with friends and family in Turks and Caicos, while Ellen shared some of the photos of a bikini-clad Blige on the beach.

‘I’ve never looked like this in my life, much less at 50,’ DeGeneres said, as the audience applauded.

The singer even admitted that, during the COVID-19 quarantine, she listened to some of her old music for the very first time.

‘I really didn’t like listening to even my speaking voice, let alone listening to Mary J. Blige, but I’ve grown so much in confidence that, during the quarantine, I don’t know, something just said, “Listen to some Mary J. Blige,’ she said.

The singer added she felt like, ‘an outside person’ listening to her old songs, adding that she was blown away that, ‘so many of the lyrics were helping me now.’

She added she was listening to her 1994 album My Life, and specifically the title song and wondered, ‘Wow, how did I write those lyrics? How did I do that?’

Blige also teased there is, ‘definitely new music coming soon… real, real, real soon,’ though she wouldn’t offer more details.

The singer also spoke about a new campaign she’s a part of through Gold Bond that celebrates Black stuntwomen, ‘and how they are fighting for representation and to be recognized.’

‘You talk about diversity in the entertainment industry, and Black women getting more roles and better roles, you can’t ignore Black stuntwomen because they are an extension of us,’ Blige added.

‘We need these women to be recognized at the Oscars, just like a costume designer or a director, because they choreograph the fights and make it easy for us, so they’re extremely important,’ Blige added.
