Bizarre Backlash: Americans Claim Katy Perry’s AFL Grand Final Performance is for a ‘Made-Up Event’.

Following her announcement in September of 2024 as the main performance for the AFL Grand Final, Katy Perry has faced more criticism.

This time, the pop sensation was made fun of by perplexed American fans who implied the performance was a “step down” for the 39-year-old. Some even referred to the Grand Final as a “made-up event.”

Pop Crave shared the news on X on Thursday along with a promo image of Katy clutching an AFL ball, which sparked the outcry.

Katy Perry has been insulted once more, this time by perplexed American fans who said her impending AFL Grand Final performance was a’step down’ for the 39-year-old, with some even dubbing the Grand Final a’made-up event’.

‘Katy Perry will headline Telstra Pre-Game Entertainment at the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final on September 28th.’

US followers were perplexed by the announcement, with one noting, ‘Katy = unknown made up event’ and pointing out that her musical competitor, Lady Gaga, is generally anticipated to play at the Paris Olympics.

Another person tweeted a gif of Seinfeld’s George Costanza frowning with the remark, ‘What kind of weird sportsball event is this?’.

One user criticized Katy’s recent tracks, such as Woman’s World, saying, ‘She will be singing all her songs previous to 2018 because the average audience doesn’t know anything current.’

Despite the fact that the AFL Grand Final is one of the most popular events on the Australian sporting calendar, one fan speculated that the booking was just another indicator of the singer’s decline.

‘This is one step away from starting vehicle dealerships,’ they wrote.

Australian Rules football supporters also took to social media on Thursday to attack the AFL following the revelation that Perry will perform.

News that the Roar hitmaker would be heading to Australia for the September clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was met with a chorus of disapproval from fans, with many asking why the AFL needed to import overseas talent.

US fans were quick to issue their bewilderment over the announcement with one commenting: ‘Katy = unknown made up event.’

Similarly, another shared a gif of Seinfeld’s George Costanza squinting with the caption: ‘what kind of obscure sportsball event is this?’

“AFL Grand final should be about giving Australian bands some exposure. Let @birdsoftokyo do it again they were awesome when they did it,” one fan commented on X.

Another chimed in with a similar sentiment, suggesting that the overseas performers recruited for the Grand Final were often past their used-by date.

‘The AFL continuing their long standing practice of hiring foreign performers a decade or two after they were popular,’ the commenter wrote while another chimed in with ‘this would have been huge a decade ago.’

One commenter took a dig at the lacklustre performance of Katy’s recent singles, such as Woman’s World with: ‘She will be performing all her songs prior to 2018 because the general public doesn’t know anything recent’

Despite the AFL Grand Final being one of the most popular events on the Aussie Sporting calendar, one follower suggested that the booking was a further sign of downward trajectory for the singer

‘This is a step away from opening car dealerships,’ wrote another critic

Katy confirmed the news in a statement on Thursday, sharing her excitement to return to Australia.

‘I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final.

‘See you in September Oi Oi Oi!’ she said.

Katy Perry’s comeback single, Woman’s World, did not do well on the charts, prompting her to blame others, according to DailyMail.com.

Insiders say she is urgently trying to come up with a fresh plan to rescue her musical comeback.

The singer’s debut song from her seventh studio album, 143, was criticized for being unoriginal, hypocritical, and clichéd, despite being marketed as an inspiring feminist anthem.
